From the recording It USed to Rain
Like Ocean of Love, Brian originally wrote Satellite for the pop Rock band The Donahues that he played in from 2013-2015. It later evolved and became live set staple for Brian's Garage and surf-rock band Waves of Rust. The song was inspired by a couple lines in the Billy Bragg tune "New England" in which Billy sings "I saw two shooting starts last night, I wished on them but they were only satellites". Such a great line. The song takes that idea of unfulfilled wishes and looks at it from the perspective of the satellite -- someone who wants to shirk responsibility for other people's hopes and dreams. It's a bit the opposite of Ocean of Love which was written at the same time.
Lyrics
Satellite
I ain't no shooting star
I'm just a satellite
Don't make a wish on me
I'm just some junk in the night
I'm not the hero you need
I won't be saving your life
I'm just a satellite
But if you're falling fast
I'll try to lend a hand
and when it goes to shit
I hope you understand
I got no magic sword
I'm just some guy with a knife
I'm not the hero you need
I won't be staying tonight
Don't wish on me
Don't wish on me
Don't wish on me
Oh no don't wish on me 'cause
I am no meteor
Burning across the sky
I'm just circling around up here and
Happened to catch your eye
I'm just a satellite
First star you see tonight
Wind blown dandelion seeds
Coins in a wishing well
I ain't any one of these
I am no meteor
Burning across the sky
I'm just circling around up here and
Happened to catch your eye
I'm just a satellite
