From the recording It USed to Rain
David and the Falcons
This song was written about David Eronemo, a friend of Brian's and the front man for Bettyford Falcons a Seattle Rock band who played live shows from 2005 through 2012. Brian joined the band as a bass player in 2007, and later became the lead guitar player after David's brother Ralph moved out of Seattle in 2009. David passed away in 2024, and this is Brian's reflections on his feelings about that loss, and about the loss of the Falcons as a band, and what music and Rock and Roll meant to David -- which was a lot.
Lyrics
David and the Falcons
Well I've been sitting here thinking
About this song and what you'd say
I spent all day listening
to all those songs we used to play
I was far off on an island
When I heard that you were gone
wondering why I wasn't crying
Took eight long months to write this song
And Rock & Roll she never gave you
Everything you thought she would
and in the end did she not break you
Like you always knew she could?
Up on stage you had 'em spellbound
Your amplifier always dimed
And the feedback it was glorious
I can still hear it in my mind
But Rock & Roll she is a liar
Though I could believe when I heard you sing
I swear that I could hear her laughter
When you wrecked the Demolition Kings
And Rock & Roll she never gave you
Everything you thought she would
and in the end did she not break you
Like you always knew she could?
So I pulled up those old recordings
and I sat myself down to mix
So your life's work amounts to something
More than just you calling it quites
'cause as the Falcons we were flying
and I'll release that album after
I can get through all of this crying
from listening back to all your laughter
And Rock & Roll she never gave you
Everything you thought she should
and in the end did she not break you
Like you always knew she would?
We knew she would
